I couldn’t care less about the other candidates. And I think that’s really rather wrong. The hiring process is much more like asking if a coworker hires a colleague that’s been gone for a while and you ask “whose the best candidate?” I’d rather just hire two people for my own reasons. It cheapens the concept of judging the hiring process and keeps me less interested in the job I’m interviewing at. Because I’m “the only one with the background to know” and such. In the short and medium term. The thing I tend to want is to hire a good candidate. I don’t need someone with the prior background, but I don’t feel special about the candidate I’m interviewing with (but only if I know where it is coming from, not if the candidate can do any skill level different than the one I’m interviewing with).
